Night Ride: The Official Inaugural Perth Night Riders Cycling Club Ride

Thursday January 3 @ 6:00pm

35km: Leisurely 15-20km/h, Night ride, Road bike - Some hills

With the signing of the peace treaty at The Camfield on the recent Peace Treaty Ride between the North of the River Night Riders Cycling Club headed by Stan and the South of the Night Riders Cycling Club headed by Kleber, they have ended all hostilities and have settled their differences. As a result, the Perth Night Riders Cycling Club was formed. The voting achieved the necessary 99% vote that was required with only some vehemently opposed to the idea, not mentioning the one very tall male and the other female with short hair. These members were shouted down by the majority and after a while, a steady calm preceded the group. Thanking King and King L'Eagle Solicitors for arranging the documentation for the signing of the Peace Treaty. So, what we have is The Official Inaugural Perth Night Riders Cycling Club Ride to which we will allow the CTA members to participate and in the future may allow the CTA to affiliate with us. To find out more, join this CTA of WA ride from the Narrows, South side, near the toilet block. Come for a pleasant ride via the Nedlands foreshore, Mt Claremont, Shenton Park and Kings Park. It's hamburger night in Nedlands. Must have good working front and rear lights. ...

Perth Stadium BBQ Ride

Sunday January 6 @ 8:30am

50km: Moderate 20-25km/h, Touring bike

Meet at the Loftus Community Centre, Leederville. There will be a second pick up for members living on the south side of the river at 9.00am under the Narrows Bridge north side. This ride involves following most of the Swan River upstream to Guildford stopping at Tranby for morning tea and toilet stop. We will continue to the new Perth Stadium where you will see, if you haven't already, the beautiful development of the lakes, native gardens and the sheltered bbq facilities. It truly is very well done and has a very vibrant atmosphere and is a credit to those responsible. Bring your touring bikes with panniers and byo your meat, drinks, etc. as there are no shops but maybe a mobile coffee vendor. Members that do not have touring bikes, bring your meat, etc. so other members can carry it for you. I suggest that you freeze you meat, wrap in newspaper and put in plastic. Being warm at this time of year, it should be defrosted when we arrive at the stadium. Afterwards, back to the LCC via the Narrows. Leader: Stan Phone: 9345 3552 or 043 9955 241 ...

Australia Day Long Weekend Guilderton Spoke Tour

Saturday January 26 - Monday January 28

100km: Moderate 20-25km/h, Public Holiday, Road bike - Some hills, Tour

A new exciting spoke tour to Guilderton is planned for the 2019 January Australia Day long weekend being Saturday the 26th to Monday the 28th. We have a three bedroom house with full kitchen and bathroom with room on the back lawn for tenting. There is no safe way to cycle to Guilderton, especially since it is a long weekend so car transportation is in order. Members wishing to participate may want to car pool. To get to there: From the Yanchep National Park turn off, you continue onto the Indian Ocean Drive approximately 36 km's and turn left onto Guilderton Road eventually becoming Mortimer Road. Approximately 200 m after the Moore River Road House, Burnett St is the first turn on the right. The address is #6 Burnett St, Guilderton. Itinerary: Saturday, 26th January 2019 (Australia Day) Please arrive around 10.30 am so we can settle in and for those wanting to put up tents. After a cup of tea, it is planned to ride into town, well it ain't far, for lunch or maybe from the Road House. Or bring your own in an eski. Weather permitting we may just ride all the quiet roads of Guilderton and have a good Captain Cook. There is the Guilderton Light House but there is a small amount of limestone road to get there. Today is Australia Day. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. So it is planed to have a picnic dinner on the beautiful green grass (and it very well is) on the river foreshore nearby to the General Store. Bring your own cold cuts and salad, chardie and/or beer to celebrate. Bbq facilities are available or you can order fish and chips from the General Store. And of course, bring something Ostralian to wear. I think around 4.30ish sounds good and if hot enough, a dip in the Moore River will be in order. So bring your cozies. Depending on the atmosphere down on the foreshore, we may have a few quiet ones down there or back at the house. Sunday, 27th January 2019 Choices ,choices, choices. If really hot, we may go for a very early morning ride back up the Guilderton Road to the new hamlet of Woodridge off the Indian Ocean Drive where there is the Verge 301 Cafe for brecky, or morning tea, approximately a 30 km ride return. We can check out all the quiet roads there too. Back at the house, we can go swimming at the beach or the river, go canoeing or kayaking (if you have'em, bring'um), explore the river mouth and if it is open go on the other side of the river. Members may want to do a spot of fishing early in the morning or evening. Photography may be in order this weekend. Lunch and the evening meal to be decided. Again, either bring your own or obtain from Road House or General Store. Monday,28th January 2019 I guess most members will want to beat the traffic so it is planned to leave probably late morning. Of course after the mandatory general clean up. Accommodation: There is 3 bedrooms, 2 with 2 single beds and one with a double bed. First in best dressed. A fold out double bed in the lounge area. There is a large room upstairs with views and to catch sea breezes which can be used for sleeping. Or tenting on the lawn at the back. Only one bathroom and one toilet. Food and what to bring, what is supplied: You are to bring all your own towels, toiletries and bedding, food and drink, esky (there is only one fridge and ice can be obtained from the General Store or Road House), kayak/canoe, swimming cozies and beach towel, wine glass and/or stubby holder, fishing gear, Frisbee, football, cricket bat (all that Ozzie stuff), Ostraliana clothing, Vegemite, don't forget the Aeroguarde, the Chair and/or picnic blanket. And your bike because we are a cycling club. For those into golf, you may want to bring your golf clubs but first check if you can place a round at the Guilderton Golf Club. Costs: $10/person/night. Total $20 for two nights. Confirmation and what you need to do: Email Stan on stancds@netspace.net.au if you are wanting to attend and how many. What type of accommodation you require (see above). A damn good sense of humour and your best Ozzie accent. To help me, please email ASAP. ...

9 Rounds of Golf Ride

Sunday February 3 @ 8:00am

70km: Moderate 20-25km/h, Road bike - Some hills

Meet at the Narrows, South side, near the toilet block at 8am. No we are not going to play golf. That would be silly, we are a cycling club. We are going to cycle 9 golf courses and why do you ask. Well, golf courses usually have flattish bits in between them but around them they sometimes are hilly and quite picturesque and tree-ee with birdies. Starting from the Narrows we will cycle to the Embleton Golf Course, Mt Lawley Golf Club, WA Golf Club (yes up the infamous Creswell St), Lake Karrinyup Country Club, Hamersley Golf Course, Wembley Golf Complex, Cottesloe Golf Club, Lake Claremont Golf Club and finally Nedlands Golf Club and back to the Narrows. Morning tea at around 45 km's at the beautiful Wembley Golf Complex. This ride will be conducted at a moderate pace generally but may go higher if favorable conditions, could go a lot slower too especially up you know what, so this is a good ride for members who like a challenge. I haven't decided which bike of mine I will ride yet. Included will be Lake Monger, Jackadder Lake and some other water ways. This ride is good for bird fanciers and if anything interesting is spotted, we'll stop and have a gander. Dinner will be somewhere, dunno yet. The Long Weekend, One Day, No Pannier Tour (Again)

Sunday March 3 @ 8:30am

90km: Moderate 20-25km/h, Road bike - Flat, Tour, Touring bike

Please Note: This page may be updated prior to ride. As last years Long Weekend, One Day, No Pannier Tour was a successful days ride, we are going to run this one again which is very handy for the up and coming CTAWA 2019 Victorian Goldfields Tour run by Trevor. Members participating on Trevor's tour are encouraged to do this ride as it would be good training prior to the CTAWA 2019 Victorian Goldfields Tour. The idea is to have a long days ride as a tour and we can all rest up on the Monday public holiday. A good training ride and you will get to meet your fellow tour riders. Please note, if the weather is exceptionally unkind, the ride will be shortened. Meeting at the Mandurah TS for a 8.30 am start, we head off in a clockwise direction, east, through flat farming country side on back roads to Pinjarra where we will have an enjoyable morning tea at that quirky tea room which we affectionately call Patrick's cafe (because Patrick found it). Purchasing our lunches from the world famous Pinjarra Bakery to have on the road, we head further east (towards Dwellingup) but turning onto quiet back roads heading south and eventually west where we will scoff down our lunch somewhere on the banks of the Harvey Estuary/Peel Inlet From here we travel north towards Yunderup where we will have afternoon tea then back to the Mandurah TS for home. This ride will be conducted as a tour, at touring pace. However there will the opportunity for the hoons of the club to 'open up' on some of the sections. ...

CTAWA 2019 Victorian Goldfields Tour

Monday March 11 - Sunday March 24

800km: Tour, Touring bike

As the tour is now fully subscribed, registrations are closed. No further applications will be considered Over the years, The Cycle Touring Association of WA (Inc) has periodically organised interstate tours to provide an opportunity to explore other parts of Australia by bicycle, sharing the experience and the camaraderie of fellow club members. Cycling predominately on sealed, quiet back country roads, the CTAWA 2019 Victorian Goldfields Tour is based loosely on part of a previous Bicycle Network event, with the route being modified significantly to incorporate the riding of four (unsealed) Rail Trails within the region. In total contrast to the harsh remoteness of the vast goldfields region of WA, the main Victorian Goldfields are within a relatively contained area, with the tour route passing through many beautiful goldrush villages, different landscapes and the vineyards of the Pyrenees wine region. This total 14 day, unsupported tour of approximately 800km, will traverse a circular route commencing and finishing from Melbourne over twelve riding days. Two rest days in the twin historic and vibrant cities of Bendigo and Ballarat have been factored into the itinerary to allow participants time to recuperate and explore the very popular tourist attractions on offer - the arts precincts, historic buildings and museums, parks, gardens and lakes, along with great cafes and restaurants. To celebrate the tour coming to an end, an evening dinner will be arranged at a suitable venue in Bacchus Marsh on the penultimate riding day, Saturday 23 March 2019. The tour will start (at 9.00am Monday 11 March 2019)) and finish at Discovery Parks - Melbourne, 129 Ashley Street, Braybrook 3019. This caravan park is conveniently located in the western suburbs (adjacent to Footscray) and is only 1.5km from Tottenham Train Station on the Sunbury line. For those participants electing to stay at the caravan park pre-tour, on-site, dry storage of collapsed bike boxes will be arranged for the duration of the event. For those participants planning to fly into Melbourne over the weekend preceding the tour's commencement, ever endeavour will be explored to try and mitigate the expense of transporting yourself, bike box and luggage from Tullamarine Airport to Braybrook. As this is a full pannier cycling tour, collective reservations (and payment) will only be made on behalf of those participants who are camping on their selected dates. Organisation of any other style of accommodation (cabins, villas, en-site caravans, B&Bs, motel/hotel rooms), either pre & post tour, the entire event or on any of the rest days is entirely the responsibility of individuals for arranging bookings and direct payment. Even though this tour seems a long way off, planning ahead to ensure you have the appropriate time allocated during March 2019 to participate in this event is essential. Details on the camping venues for the tour can be found here. A "mud map" of the tour can be found here. Daily routes downloadable as gpx file are available here. As the above tour is now fully subscribed, registrations are closed. No further applications will be considered ...

Social Night: Fitness and ageing with good health

Thursday May 23 @ 7:00pm

Meeting, Social

Join Sally, a Personal and Master REHAB Trainer, for the evening, as she discusses the importance of cross-training for cyclists in order to get the most out of your riding. Information will include strength training, flexibility and nutrition, and an understanding that there is more to staying fit and healthy into our mature years than just riding the bike, not taking away from the fact that this is a very good start. Sally will cover typical muscle imbalances that can occur for cyclists, especially if you also have a day job at a desk with a computer. The benefits of massage will also be included, plus an interactive session to provide suggested routines that can be done at home for everyone's benefit. Sally's personal experience includes trigger point, and rehab massage, and is a member of Fitness Australia, and Australian Fitness Network. Her initial interest in this area came as a result of seeing her own parents deteriorate as they aged, and the desire to raise people's awareness of how important exercise, health and wellness are to enjoying life as you age. Please RSVP to Teresa for catering purposes. ...

CTAWA Christmas in July Function

Saturday July 13 - Sunday July 14

Moderate 20-25km/h, Road bike - Some hills, Tour, Touring bike

This year, our annual Christmas in July function will be held on Saturday night, 13 July 2019 in the small, picturesque country town of Waroona, located along the South Western Highway, some 110km from Perth. The venue in the centre of town is the Waroona Hotel, a 1920's country pub located at 16 Fouracre Street, Waroona. Mine host, Toni Andersen has put together an accommodation and Christmas dinner package to meet our requirements. With only 11 rooms of various sleeping configurations (most with shared bathroom facilities), the capacity to stay at the hotel is limited to 15 people at a cost of $45.00 per person (including a continental breakfast on Sunday morning). However, the nearby Drakesbrook Hotel Motel (only 1km away) at 8229 South Western Highway, Waroona is available to cater for overflow accommodation requirements on a self-booking basis. When making a reservation (preferably during the morning) on 9733 1566, ask specifically for Joe Angie (the owner) who is prepared to extend a discount on room rates to CTAWA cyclists. The cost of the Christmas dinner at the Waroona Hotel will be $35.00 per person. Beverages can be purchased from the bar. All payments to the Waroona Hotel, either bed & dinner ($80), or dinner only ($35), to be made at reception upon arrival. Names will be checked off and payments by credit cards are acceptable. As a touring club, cycling to and from the venue is encouraged with only the necessity to carry a light bag with a change of clothes and your toiletries. Secure overnight storage of bicycles is available at the hotel. The route https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28052290 on Saturday 13 July 2019 starts at the Armadale Train Station at 9.00am (for a 9.15am departure) cycling along quiet sealed back roads through Byford, Serpentine and Pinjarra to Waroona. There are plenty of opportunities for morning tea and lunch stops along the way. The return journey https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28061728 on Sunday 14 July 2019 commencing after breakfast takes us via Dawesville back to the Mandurah Train Station with access also for a lunch venue along the way. For some, the possibility of inclement weather in July may lead to the choice of travelling by car to attend, nonetheless your support of this event to make sure it is a success is welcomed. For room allocation purposes and numbers attending the Christmas dinner can you please email me your details at teebs50@gmail.com . In fairness to other CTA members, please abide by your initial commitment to the event as late withdrawal may deny attendance by others. As the Waroona Hotel can only cater for a maximum of 45 diners, please book early to ensure you don't miss out! ...

Social Night: Touring & the History of Bicycle Gears

Thursday July 25 @ 7:00pm

Meeting, Social

Ever wondered what it was like cycling 100 years ago. Want to hear about some recent cycle tours, then join us for an evening of both. Alan Nabar, from the Historic Cycle Club, will discuss the history of bicycle gearing. Back in the good old days, if you were wealthy enough to own a bike, multiple gears were not an option. It has taken more than 100 years to get to the easy changing, multi wide ratio gears of today. Questions to consider during the night will include: What worldwide catastrophe occurred in 1815 that inspired the first cycling craze in 1817?; Why are gear ratios measured in inches (or centimeters)?; Can one get into another gear by pedaling backwards?; How would you feel about reaching down to the chain wheel whilst riding to move the chain with your fingers? Add to this, discussions on recent cycle tours in Victoria and Bali, and you are in for a good night. Trevor will provide insights into the recent CTA tour in Victoria, and Steve will introduce us to the world of touring through Bali. ...
