A self-supported pannier tour of south-east Queensland starting in Brisbane from the Newmarket Caravan Park on 21 April 2021 and finishing 800 km later back at the same location on 8 May 2021.
From Brisbane we travel west to the Lockyer Valley then join the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail up the Great Dividing Range on easy grades to Yarraman. After a rest day in the Bunya Mountains we head down to the peanut capital of Kingaroy and join the Kilkivan-Kingaroy Rail Trail to Gympie. After a rest day at the coastal resort of Noosa (rest day) and a final climb to the mountain colony of Maleny we return to the coast at Redcliffe and back to Brisbane via the Morten Bay (mainly) off road bicycle path.
The route is a mix of rail trails, rural back roads and country highways. The 150 km of rail trail sections include quite rideable surfaces of bitumen, firm smooth gravel and a short distance on compacted rail ballast. Robust road, touring and mountain bikes with 32 mm+ touring tyres are recommended. Parallel bitumen highways can be used if the trails are too difficult. Gradients are mostly gentle.
Costs for tent campers are estimated at $300 per person. Those wanting cabins or hotels are asked to make their own arrangements in the caravan park or in nearby towns.
Anyone interested can contact me through firstname.lastname@example.org indicating how many would be coming and if bookings for a tent site is required.
Please note that the ride is for 2021, (NOT 2020).
Hope you decide to give it a whirl.
