Social Night – Quiz Night + Talk on Cycling from China to the UK

Thursday June 9, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

: ,

Announcing the first social night of the year for all CTA members on 9 Jun 2022. It promises to be fun and informative.

We’ll kick off with a Quiz Night on all things to do with the CTA and its history, tours, cycling & bikes or anything interesting about particular cyclists. I’m calling for members to submit up to 3 questions each, a selection of which will be asked on the night – if your question comes up, you stand to win a point (if you remember the answer). Questions must come with answers that are multiple choice or Yes/No or True/False. So start going through the archived CTA newsletters and our website to get some inspiration.
Please submit all questions to hey_yew@ctawa.asn.au by 25 May.

CTA member Huilin Sun will give a talk about her ride from China to the UK in the 2nd half of the night.

Huilin and Gary went on an epic journey cycling from China to England in 1992. They travelled ten thousand kilometres over nine countries in one year from Huilin’s home, the bustling city of Beijing to Gary’s home town, the sleepy holiday destination of Paignton.

They traversed over the highest pass in the world. They climbed from the saltiest lake to the holiest city. They slept in bomb craters and washed in glacier waters. The experiences, not the mileage or the altitude, that made the trip interesting. They were escorted by the police and strolled down streets with only ammunition shops in sight. They were woken up by poachers in the night and stoned by naughty children by the road side. They carried their bikes over land slides and cleaned swimming pools with a hose pipe. Above all, the people they meet made the trip most unforgettable. Everyday encounters allowing them to gain insights into other worlds and experience the minutiae of life.

Huilin will tell the stories of a life-changing trip three decades ago. Some of which are as vivid as yesterday, many of which are still changing her life.

Please remember to bring you own cup or mug.

See you on 9 Jun 7 pm at the The Rise in Maylands.
Cheers
