A Touring History of the CTA

This page contains a rough timeline of all CTA tours longer than four days.
Note: There have been many others tours by CTA members over the years but the timeline only contains tours that were run “under the CTA banner”.

Early Days

In the 70’s and 80’s hotel, motel and YHA accommodation was used for weekends away in most cases. If camping was used, most of the gear would be transported to the towns visited. Couples weekends were a popular feature. The makeup of the membership at the time also developed a fairly competitive group of cyclists in the club. This evolved into the Achievement Series being developed, Audax Australia affiliated with the CTA, time trials, hill climbs and the beginning of the mountain bike craze. Members achieved times in the various events were also published in the Chain Letters.
In the late 80’s and early 90’s this competitiveness was pervading the club, to the extent that there were tours being cancelled because of lack of interest, and the contents of the Chain Letters reflected this trend. In the early 90’s Audax Australia severed their ties with the CTA, Australian Time Trials Association, (ATTA), were on the scene and the Perth Mountain Bike Club was swamped with people joining the new cycling craze. At this time the club took advantage of this move to promote the touring side of the club with the slogan “Let’s put the T back into the CTA”. This promotion appeared to work, as there was a new enthusiasm in the club, with the large number of tours being well supported.
Post 1990 saw a big increase of two and three day weekend tours being offered and the inclusion of the now popular Social evenings.

Because of the considerable number of two and three day weekend tours the CTA has run over the years, the following list contains tours of four days or more only. Recognition must go out to those members who organised, and participated in, the many weekends away as well as those listed.
